(Octant): 8” Solid Brass Unique Nautical STALLONE-INDIA
Sextant This is the newly developed solid brass unique
nautical sextant. This sextant is also known as octant. It has
one large telescope; This is a beautiful and unique solid brass
and hardwood reproduction of an early 1800’s 11.5-inch radius
octant (predecessor to the modern sextant). The term
“octant” means 1/8 of a circle, or 45 degrees. Because of the
arrangement of the mirrors, sextants and octants can measure
twice the angle of the scale. Although a reading of 90 degrees
was possible for octants, 80 degrees was considered a
practical limit. There is a hinged magnifier to help read the
German Silver vernier scale, and there are six swing-arm
filters. Like most all octants, this model does not have a
telescope, but instead has the proper style brass adjustable
peep site. On the back of the octant is a large rounded
hardwood handle. While this octant is fully functional, it is not
calibrated and is not intended for navigation. .
