11.5-inch radius STALLONE-INDIA OCTANT (predecessor to
the modern sextant). This is a beautiful and unique solid brass
and hardwood reproduction of an early 1800’s The term
“octant” means 1/8 of a circle, or 45 degrees. Sextants and
octants can measure twice the angle of the scale due to the
arrangement of its mirrors. Eighty degrees was regarded as a
practical limit, although a reading of 90 degrees was possible
for octants.
This octant is large and solid, measuring 11 1/4 inches (28.6
cm) by 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall, 5 inches (12.7 cm) deep, and
weighs 2 pounds, 9 ounces (1.2 kg). To assist in reading the
German Silver vernier scale, there is a hinged magnifier and
six swing-arm filters. This model does not have a telescope,
just as most all octants do not, and instead has the proper
style brass adjustable peep site. A large rounded hardwood
handle is on the back of the octant.
Please note that even though this octant is fully functional, it
is not calibrated and is not intended for navigation.
