SURBAHAR
T he Surbahar was created in the nineteenth century because many Rudra Veena maestros would give training on the veena only to their direct descendants. Thus this enlarged version of the sitar came into  existence to enable students to learn the Dhrupad style from such maestros, and ironically it caused a further decline in the popularity of the Rudra Veena, because many sitar players found it easier to play, and would first do an extended alap on the Surbahar, before switching over to the Sitar for playing gats and tans. This was how Ustad Inayat Khan (Vilayat Khan’s father) would perform in his concerts. The harmonics in the Surbahar are not as prominent as in the Rudra veena. The veena therefore remains a superior instrument and the instrument of first choice for Dhrupad. However the Surbahar is easier for players who have trained on the sitar and remains the instrument of choice for sitar players who wish to play the Dhrupad style. Usually what is performed on the surbahar now is a blend of the Khayal and Dhrupad
