there is a description of Veenas. These instruments
are related to temples and Devalays. Veena and
Been are very ancient instruments. These instruments
are for Hindu Gods and their names are also
enclosed with them. Like Saraswati Veena, Rudra
Veena, Shiv Veena etc. People believed that the
creation of these Veenas was in 17th century and their
origin is to be believed around 2000 years back.
Today Vichiter Veena is known as Vichiter because in
this instrument there is no any signs of Swar. It is not
kept with the help of hand and elbow. Only with the
help of thumb and two Mizrabs in fingers. Swar is
created in wires and in other hand there is a weight of
glass, which creates Swar. Its shape is like a balance,
in the middle there is Dand and in sides there is round
Tombas one each and for weighting the Swars,
paperweight is used. Vichiter Veena’s ancient name is
Shiv Veena. It is also known previously in different
names – Shutri Veena, Tantra Veena, Batta Veena
etc. But today it is known as Vichiter Veena. Ustad
Abdul Aziz Khan of Patiala family has given a new life
to this instrument. Vichiter Veena is believed to be a
divine instrument and the music produced through it
always devoted to the absolute. The Veena has the
distinction of being the only plucked instrument that is
considered to be the purest musical sound and by
legend is the foundation of all art.
The Vichiter Veena has four main strings three front
side supporting strings and along with two chikaris,
15th Tarabs (resonance strings) having a range of
three and half octaves. Resonance strings confine a
player to “pure” or “perfect” note as they themselves
are tuned on “perfect”. The Vichiter Veena is believed
to be a divine instrument and the music produced
through it always devoted to the absolute. The
Vichiter Veena has the distinction of being the only
plucked instrument that is considerable to be the
subtle of human voice.
